Running in the winter, what should I wear??

After over 10 years of winter running in Buffalo, NY, I've learned a thing or two about cold weather running. Trust me, if anyone's going to bitch about the cold, it's me, but just because it's freezing outside, doesn't mean you're doomed to treadmill running for the next few months until things start to thaw out!

For years I only ran in the summer because I thought for sure I'd freeze my ass off if I tried to run outside in the winter, but once I finally did, I realized that with the proper clothing, it's actually not so bad, and can also be kind of fun running in the snow!

​Over 10 years later, I still use this chart below to figure out what to wear on my runs.

How cold is it??
  • 55° F+ - shorts and a short-sleeved top
  • 45° - 54° F - shorts or tights and a long sleeve base layer top
  • 33° - 44° F - tights and a long-sleeve base layer top, gloves and thermal headband optional
  • 20° - 32° F - tights, long-sleeve vase layer, second top layer (vest, etc.), gloves and thermal headband, second bottom layer optional
  • 0 - 19° F - tights, second bottom layer (running pants), long-sleeve base layer, jacket, gloves, thermal headband

Some extra tips
  • I love gloves with flip top fingers so when my hands start to get warm (I know it sounds crazy, but they will!) then I can flip the fingers first before taking them all the way off.
  • I tend to get chilled after cold weather runs, so if I'm not going home right after my run I make sure I bring a sweatshirt or jacket and sometimes even a pair of fuzzy boots to change into to keep me warm.
  • On super cold days, I wear a fleece neck warmer. These are great, especially on windy runs, because you can pull them over your chin to stay warm.​
