Adrenals 101! 🤓 You’ve probably heard of the adrenal glands in the context of “adrenal fatigue.” Why? Because adrenal fatigue is so prominent today - recognized or not. In our hustle culture world, most of us deal with some degree of adrenal fatigue. Thankfully there are things you can do today to boost your adrenal function! But first, what even are the adrenal glands? Adrenal glands are tiny, bean shaped organs located on top of your kidneys. Although little in size, they sure are mighty in function! As a part of your endocrine system, these organs are responsible for producing multiple hormones in the body. They're also a main player in the HPA-Axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal). These 3 work together to regulate your body’s stress response. When overworked, you’re left with a classic case of “adrenal fatigue.” Your adrenal glands might be overworked after a long bout of chronic stress (physical or mental). For example:
Adrenal fatigue, although usually due to stressful situations, can also be brought on by a poor diet, underlying infections, or lack of sleep. 😴 Here are the most common symptoms of adrenal fatigue:
📣 This is the part women in their 30's and 40's need to hear... As our sex hormones start to decline (hello, perimenopause), our adrenals work even harder to make up for them. And when your body is in a state of stress (even stress from working out) your body can start to run out of cortisol and pull from your progesterone, which may already be on the decline, triggering adrenal fatigue and low progesterone symptoms. This is why everyone after age of 30 should supplement their adrenals! ![]() 🍹 This adrenal cocktail is a concoction of essential vitamins and minerals to support the adrenals on a foundational level and is a great way to start your day!
Orange - Unsurprisingly, oranges are packed with vitamin C - an essential nutrient in times of stress. In fact, chronic stress depletes vitamin C stores. So, supplementing with vitamin C is non negotiable when it comes to adrenal fatigue. It’s potent antioxidant properties are also needed to fuel the adrenal glands, regulate cortisol production, protect against oxidative stress, and boost the immune system. Vitamin C also helps boost progesterone levels. Shakeology - Adaptogens, like maca, schisandra, and ashwagandha, are known to help support adrenal stress. Camu camu is loaded with Vitamin C. Collagen - In addition to the coconut milk, collagen acts as a blood sugar regulator in the adrenal cocktail. More so, it provides essential amino acids to support build a resilient gut and boost cortisol production (which should be at its highest in the AM). Full fat coconut milk - The saturated fatty acids in coconut milk helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and provide your body with the energy it needs. Creatine - The WHO now recognizes creatine an essential nutrient for women (it’s not just for bodybuilders!) Not specifically adrenal related, but creatine helps with gut health, immunity, brain health, and mood and depression. Don't worry, this won't make you bulky. You only need 3-5g a day! Sea Salt - Despite common belief, salt and iodine are essential nutrients. After all, it’s these minerals that are essential electrolytes, which are critical in energy production, blood pressure, and adrenal function. When you're dealing with cortisol issues, your adrenals will use up the salt in your body. Cream of tartar - Cream of tartar offers an abundance of minerals, specifically potassium, and when potassium interacts with vitamin C, you get an adrenal modulator. Meaning, it’ll either increase or decrease adrenal function, depending on your body’s need. Adrenal fatigue is something I’ve personally dealt with on and off for over a decade now. After YEARSSSSS of hearing “Your blood work is fine. K, bye.” I finally found a functional Dr to do the proper testing and give me some answers. My biggest symptoms were energy levels and muscle fatigue. My quads would get burnt out just walking up a flight of stairs! 🔬 Want to know for sure if your adrenals are being overworked? Because your cortisol levels fluctuate throughout the day, the best way to find out if your adrenals are being overworked is through a cortisol saliva test, not blood work. So if your Dr suggests a blood test, now you'll know what to ask for!
